What the gold star actually is
The REAL ID Act set federal standards for state cards. A compliant card carries a star — usually gold, sometimes a cut-out or an inline mark — to show the holder presented proof of identity, date of birth, SSN and residency when it was issued. Since the enforcement deadline, a compliant card is what TSA accepts from the list of approved documents for domestic air travel.
The star is not a decoration. Its position, size and treatment differ by state, and a star in the wrong place is the first thing anyone who knows the card will see. We place it to your state's spec.
Star placement and layout by state
Placement is upper right on the face in most states. A handful use a different mark entirely — an inline "REAL ID" legend, a cut-out, or a star on the reverse. A few states only issue compliant cards on request, which means both versions of that state's card exist in the wild and either is plausible.
Send the state in the DM and we confirm the treatment before quoting. If you have a photo of a genuine card from that state, send it — it saves a round trip.

Real ID vs plain ID vs licence
All three are the same physical card. The difference is the use case and the price:
- Plain state ID, $85 — bars, liquor stores, gyms, casual checks.
- Real ID, $95 — the above plus flights and bank counters, at the cost of $10 and a state-specific star.
- Driver's license, $110 — the above plus a driving entitlement, if a rental desk or a job will ask.
